Caps star Alex Ovechkin knocks out 19-year-old rookie during NHL playoff fight

A barrage of punches from Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin may have an ongoing affect the reigning Stanley Cup champions’ playoff series with the Carolina Hurricanes.

Ovechkin floored Carolina rookie Andrei Svechnikov which includes a right hook on a fight inside the first duration of Monday night’s 5-0 loss towards Hurricanes in Game 3 of their total first-round series. It absolutely was a rare fight for Ovechkin, one who knocked the 19-year-old Svechnikov with the game as he banged his helmet to the ice as they fell backward. Svechnikov, who had two goals within his playoff debut the other day, was helped to the locker room and didn’t return. That left his status unclear for Thursday’s Game 4 and beyond together with the Capitals up 2-1 in the best-of-seven series.

“First off I am hoping he’s OK,” Ovechkin said. “You’re right: I’m not really a giant fighter … He asked about to fight, I said, ‘Let’s go, yeah.’ So, Let’s hope he’s OK. You don’t want to experience a guy be harmed or something.”

It was Ovechkin’s fourth career fight and first since 2010, depending on HockeyFights.com. It absolutely was his first while in the playoffs, while Svechnikov hasn’t been inside a fight all season. Carolina coach Rod Brind’Amour was without an update on his status. The group said just that Svechnikov had an upper-body injury.

“How does one discuss it? It is a little tough since i just heard Ovie look at it: he explained our guy challenged him,” Brind’Amour said. “If employing case, it’s really a quite different. When you watch the video, because I reached watch it, he slashes him twice, Ovie whack, whack after which Svech gives it back. And, Right after should there be words exchanged, only one guy’s gloves appear way first. And that is certainly Ovie, it’s not our guy.”

It was only a year ago that Svechnikov got the chance to meet a gambler he or she long looked up to until the Capitals closed their Cup run and before Svechnikov was the No2 overall pick inside the draft. “It’s just an honor to own met with him,” Svechnikov said then of meeting Ovechkin.

This time, things weren’t quite so friendly. Ovechkin by using a 40lbs weight advantage locked an organisation wait Svechnikov’s collar while throwing a stable bombardment of punches. He eventually landed one squarely involved with Svechnikov’s face. And as the rookie started falling backward, Ovechkin kept his hold and delivered any blow toward Svechnikov’s forehead when they fell.

As Ovechkin skated to the field for that five-minute fighting penalty, Svechnikov was flat on his back, dazed and struggling to sit up as teammates Jordan Staal and Kevin Faulk skated to him. Svechnikov eventually could stand but was wobbly when he was helped from the ice.

Brind’Amour said he was “still sick to my stomach concerning this.”

“It’s a little bit frustrating, as they got hurt, it’s his first fight,” Brind’Amour said. “He’s played 90 games, he never fought as part of his life, I’m convinced Ovie knew that. To ensure stuff bothers me – yet it is done.”
